Out-of-Body Experiences: Timelines and the Higher Self

Since childhood, I have had unusual out-of-body experiences that I didn't fully understand. Some occurred in recurring environments. Some involved experiences that seemed connected to events in my waking life. Others involved different versions of myself or what appeared to be different possible outcomes of the same situation.
For most of my life, I experienced these things without having a framework that could explain them.
That is an important part of this story: I experienced them before I understood them.
I wasn't studying psychic development, timelines, probability, multidimensional consciousness, or theories about the Higher Self and then having experiences that reflected those beliefs. The experiences came first. Only much later did I begin encountering ideas that gave me a possible framework for understanding what I had already experienced.
Recently, several of those pieces came together in a way that caused me to look at my out-of-body experiences very differently.
I have begun to wonder whether some of my OBEs haven't simply been experiences of traveling outside the body.
What if some of them have actually been a form of consciousness training with my Higher Self and guides?
The Consciousness Operations Center

One of the most important pieces of this puzzle is an environment I have repeatedly experienced since childhood that I call the the Consciousness Operations Center.
I have written separately about the environment itself because it has remained remarkably consistent throughout my life. It appears as a large circular platform beneath a transparent dome, elevated above water and rocky shoreline. Around the platform are individual glass stations where people appear to interact with spherical interfaces. There is a central gathering area, as well as what looks like extensive infrastructure beneath the platform.
Working With Probability in Out-of-Body Experiences
My experiences at the Consciousness Operations Center have involved both reviewing scenarios that have already occurred in my waking life and experiencing scenarios that have not yet happened. Sometimes I have experienced conversations, situations, or events that subsequently occurred. Other times, I have experienced possibilities that never happened. I have also experienced what seemed to be more than one possible version of the same scenario.
That distinction is important. If every scenario I experienced subsequently occurred, I might simply interpret these experiences as precognitive. But that isn't what happens. Instead, the experience feels much more like working with probability and exploring different potential outcomes rather than observing one predetermined future.
I don't feel that I am controlling what will happen. I seem to be exploring what could happen. Free will still matters. My choices matter, other people's choices matter, and circumstances can change. The future does not feel fixed to me. It feels like a field of possibilities and probabilities.
Reviewing the Past and Exploring the Future
Something else has become increasingly significant to me: I don't only experience scenarios involving what we would call the future. I have also reviewed scenarios that have already happened.
That raises an entirely different question:
Why would the same environment apparently provide access to information on both sides of my present moment?
From inside this human life, I experience time sequentially:
Past → Present → Future
But perhaps that sequence describes the way we experience physical reality rather than the way consciousness itself experiences information.
What I call a past event and a potential future event seem fundamentally different from my human perspective because I am experiencing this life from a particular point within the timeline. But from the perspective of a larger consciousness that is not confined to linear time, perhaps both are simply information that can be accessed.
That possibility has caused me to reconsider what may actually be happening during these experiences.
The Higher Self or Oversoul
I have come to think of the person I experience myself as in this human lifetime as one localized expression of a much larger consciousness or what we might call the Higher Self or Oversoul.
In other words, this human personality is me, but it may not be all of me.
From within this physical experience, my awareness is primarily focused on one body, one lifetime, one environment, and one apparently continuous sequence of events. But the larger consciousness may not be limited to the same perspective.
What if the Higher Self has access to much more information than the human personality ordinarily perceives? That information could potentially include other incarnational experiences, other realities, experiences we call past, probable futures, and perhaps even other versions or expressions of ourselves.
This became particularly interesting to me because some of my experiences have involved other versions of myself.
Again, I didn't develop this theory and then begin experiencing these things.
I experienced them first.
Are Past and Future Lives Really Happening at the Same Time?
This has also changed the way I think about reincarnation.
We normally describe incarnation sequentially. We have a past life, then this life, and perhaps another life after this one. But that model assumes that time operates outside physical reality exactly as we experience it while we are here.
What if it doesn't?
What we call a "past life" might only be past relative to our current human perspective.
If the Higher Self or Oversoul exists beyond the linear perception of time experienced by the human personality, then multiple incarnational experiences could potentially be occurring simultaneously from that larger perspective.
I think of it this way:
From the human perspective, we are inside the story. From the Oversoul perspective, we may have access to the library.
That possibility makes some of my out-of-body experiences considerably easier for me to understand.
Robert Monroe and the Larger Self
Years after my own experiences began, I encountered the work of out-of-body explorer Robert Monroe. In his later work, Monroe described something he called the I-There, a larger identity encompassing far more than the individual personality experiencing a single human lifetime. That concept resonated strongly with me.
The consciousness experiencing this particular human life may be part of something much larger that is not limited to this body, this personality, this incarnation, or our ordinary perception of linear time.
I find this particularly interesting alongside the work of Dolores Cannon, whose material frequently describes the Higher Self as a much larger, multidimensional consciousness capable of having experiences beyond the individual human incarnation.
Tom Campbell's consciousness model provides another interesting framework. He describes physical reality as an information-based virtual reality experienced by consciousness and discusses probability, multiple reality frames, and changing data streams.
These models aren't identical, and I don't assume that every researcher or explorer is describing precisely the same mechanism. What interests me is that I encountered aspects of these ideas experientially before I had the intellectual framework for them.
Consciousness and the Data-Stream Analogy
One of the simplest ways I have found to explain this is through something we already experience every day.
Imagine sitting in your living room. Without moving your physical body, you can watch television, play a video game, use your computer, talk with someone on Zoom, or interact with your phone.
Your body remains in essentially the same location, but your attention can become immersed in completely different streams of information.
There may be hundreds of television channels broadcasting simultaneously, even though your television displays only one. When you change the channel, you don't create the other broadcast.
You change which information stream you are accessing.
What if consciousness works in a similar way?
This physical human experience is the primary data stream my consciousness is tuned into while I am embodied. And an out-of-body experience doesn't always require consciousness to literally travel somewhere.
Maybe consciousness can change the data stream it is accessing.
If the Higher Self or Oversoul represents a much larger level of consciousness, it may have access to many more streams than this individual human personality ordinarily perceives.
That could include other realities, other incarnational experiences, and perhaps multiple probabilities associated with this particular lifetime.
A Different Way of Thinking About Timeline Shifts
This has also changed how I understand the idea of a timeline shift.
I don't necessarily think every decision requires another physical universe to suddenly appear. There may be another possibility.
What if consciousness exists within a much larger informational field containing multiple probabilities, and what we call a timeline is the particular experiential pathway we are currently having?
In that case, perhaps we don't always create timelines.
Perhaps consciousness navigates probability.
Think again about changing channels. The other broadcast doesn't suddenly come into existence because you selected it. It was already available within the larger information system. What changed was the stream you were receiving.
Perhaps something similar occurs with consciousness.
A timeline shift could represent a change in the trajectory of the reality stream we are experiencing rather than the sudden creation of an entirely new reality.
This could also help explain why I have experienced scenarios that later occurred alongside other scenarios that never did.
Maybe I wasn't necessarily seeing the future.
Maybe I was accessing a probable future.
Could the Consciousness Operations Center Be an Interface?
There is another possibility I find fascinating. Perhaps the Consciousness Operations Center doesn't literally need to be a technological facility containing glass cubicles, spherical devices, and machinery.
It might be.
But what if the architecture itself is an interface?
Our computers translate extraordinarily complicated processes into simple visual representations that human beings can understand. We click on a little folder on a screen without needing to perceive the enormous amount of electronic processing occurring underneath that image.
Consciousness seems to do something similar.
Maybe the environment I perceive as the center is a visual or spatial representation of an information process that would otherwise be incomprehensible to my human awareness.
If that is the case, I may not be seeing what consciousness literally looks like.
I may be seeing a representation of what consciousness is doing.
Suddenly, the individual stations take on another possible meaning. Each person appears immersed in an individual experience, while all of the stations exist within one much larger structure.
That reminds me of the relationship between the individual human personality and the Oversoul.
From inside the station, I experience my scenario.
From the larger perspective, perhaps there is access to the entire system.
OBE Training

When I look back over my experiences collectively rather than treating each one as an isolated event, a different pattern begins to emerge.
I have experienced reviewing events that already happened. I have experienced scenarios that later occurred. I have experienced alternate possibilities that didn't occur. I have experienced more than one possible scenario. I have encountered other versions of myself. I have experienced shifts in perspective and states of consciousness that don't conform easily to our ordinary assumptions about time and physical reality.
For most of my life, I regarded these as unusual experiences that I couldn't fully explain.
Now I am beginning to wonder whether at least some of them represent something else entirely:
Out-of-body training with my Higher Self and guides.
I have come to understand that some of my OBEs aren't simply about visiting nonphysical places. They are experiences in which I am learning how consciousness and reality work—how to work with probability, review experiences, explore possible outcomes, shift perspective, and access different streams of information.
What I once experienced as a collection of unusual OBEs now looks much more like a curriculum. And one of its central lessons has been recognizing that the consciousness I experience as “me” while embodied is only one localized aspect of a much larger consciousness.
I Experienced It Before I Understood It
I don't claim to have definitive answers about what the center objectively is or exactly how consciousness operates.
What I do have is a lifetime of experiences.
And that distinction matters to me.
I didn't read about the Higher Self, multidimensional consciousness, probability timelines, or information-based reality and then begin having experiences that matched those concepts. I experienced it before I understood it. Only afterward did I begin finding frameworks that gave me language for things I had already encountered.
The Consciousness Operations Center is a nonphysical environment where consciousness works beyond the limitations of ordinary waking awareness. It functions as both an interface and a training environment—a place where I review experiences, work with probability, explore potential outcomes, and access information outside our usual perception of linear time.
After decades of returning to this strange and deeply familiar place, I finally understand that the mystery was never simply where I was going.
The more important question is what my consciousness was learning to do there.
What once seemed like a collection of unusual out-of-body experiences now reveals a much larger pattern: training with my Higher Self and guides in how consciousness and reality actually work.
